Azuracast and playout system encoding
once BUTT is connected to AzuraCast, you usually do not manually redirect the public stream URL. AzuraCast/Liquidsoap handles the handover: your 24/7 AutoDJ/playout keeps running underneath, and the live encoder takes priority while connected.
AzuraCast’s live DJ system connects live broadcasting software directly into Liquidsoap so it can transition between live input and AutoDJ smoothly. AzuraCast’s built-in AutoDJ is what normally provides the 24/7 playout from playlists/media.
The normal setup: BUTT temporarily takes over the 24/7 playout
In AzuraCast:
-
Go to the station.
-
Go to Streamer/DJ Accounts.
-
Create or enable a streamer account.
-
In BUTT, connect using the AzuraCast live details, usually:
Server type: Icecast
Host: your AzuraCast hostname
Port: the station port
Mount/password details from the streamer account page
- Start streaming in BUTT.
When BUTT connects successfully, listeners stay on the same public stream URL, but AzuraCast switches the output from AutoDJ/playout to the live BUTT feed.
When you stop BUTT, AzuraCast should fall back to AutoDJ/playout again.
To stop the current live stream
If the “current stream” is a live encoder already connected, stop it from the source:
Open the old encoder/playout system.
Click Stop / Disconnect / End broadcast.
Then start BUTT.
Only one live source should be active for that station account/mount at a time. If the old system keeps reconnecting automatically, disable its auto-reconnect or remove/change its AzuraCast password.
To replace the 24/7 playout permanently with a new playout system
There are two common ways:
Option A — Keep AzuraCast AutoDJ off, use external playout 24/7
Use this if your new playout system will feed AzuraCast all day.
-
In AzuraCast, go to the station Profile or Edit Station area.
-
Disable or stop AutoDJ for that station.
-
Configure your playout system/BUTT to stream continuously to AzuraCast.
-
Listeners keep using the AzuraCast public mount point.
This makes the external encoder the main source.
Option B — Leave AutoDJ on as emergency backup
This is usually better for radio stations.
-
Keep AzuraCast AutoDJ enabled.
-
Let BUTT or the external playout connect as a live source.
-
If the external playout drops, AzuraCast falls back to AutoDJ.
That way, silence is avoided if the PC, internet, or encoder fails.
Do you need to redirect listeners?
Usually, no.
Listeners should keep using the same AzuraCast stream URL/mount point. AzuraCast mount points are how listeners connect to your broadcast, and a station can output the same broadcast through one or more mount points/formats.
You only need to change/redirect listener URLs if you are moving them to a completely different server, port, or mount point.
Practical checklist
Before switching over:
Make sure the old playout/encoder is stopped or its password changed.
Make sure BUTT is using the correct AzuraCast live/streamer credentials.
Test BUTT while listening from a separate device.
Keep AutoDJ enabled as backup unless you specifically want AzuraCast to depend entirely on the external playout.
Do not give multiple encoders the same live credentials unless you want connection conflicts.
For your case, I’d set it up like this: AzuraCast AutoDJ stays as backup, BUTT/new playout connects as the live source, and the old 24/7 playout is disconnected or has its password changed so it cannot reconnect.
