How to Set Up a CNAME Record

Domains & DNS · Self-help guide

A CNAME record points one hostname to another hostname instead of directly to an IP address. This is commonly used for addresses such as www, status, or app. Log in to your DNS provider and open the DNS zone for your domain. Add a new CNAME record. In the name field, enter the subdomain, for example www. In the target field, enter the destination hostname, such as yourdomain.co.uk or the hostname supplied by a service provider. Do not enter http:// or https:// in DNS records. Save the record and allow propagation time. Avoid using a CNAME at the root domain unless your DNS provider specifically supports it.
