Scheduling Tasks with Cron Jobs in Webmin
Cron jobs are scheduled tasks that run automatically on your Linux server. They are useful for sending reminders, clearing temporary files, running Laravel schedulers, processing queues, generating reports, checking APIs and creating routine backups. Webmin makes cron easier because you can create and review scheduled jobs from the control panel.
Step 1: Log in to Webmin and open System, then Scheduled Cron Jobs. You will see existing jobs for different users. Be careful with system jobs because some are required for normal server operation.
Step 2: Click Create a new scheduled cron job. Choose the user the command should run as. For website tasks, this is often the website owner or web user, not always root.
Step 3: Enter the command. For Laravel, a common command is php /path/to/project/artisan schedule:run. Make sure you use the full path to PHP and the project if required by your server setup.
Step 4: Set the timing. Cron can run every minute, hourly, daily, weekly or on custom schedules. Avoid running heavy jobs too frequently, especially on smaller VPS plans.
Step 5: Save the job and monitor results. If the task produces output, configure email notifications or redirect logs to a file so you can check for errors.
Step 6: Test manually where possible. Run the command once before relying on automation.
Cron is powerful, but poorly planned tasks can overload a server. Keep commands efficient, avoid overlapping backups, and review old jobs regularly so forgotten automation does not keep running forever.
