Managing Domains and Virtual Servers with Webmin

Webmin · Self-help guide

Webmin can help manage websites and domains on a VPS, especially when used with modules for Apache, Nginx, BIND DNS or Virtualmin. The exact options depend on what is installed, but the core idea is the same: each website needs a domain, document root, web server configuration and correct DNS records.

Step 1: Decide where the website files will live. A common structure is something like /var/www/example.com/public_html or a user-specific home directory. Keep each site in its own folder so files do not become mixed together.

Step 2: Open the relevant web server module. For Apache, use Servers then Apache Webserver. For Nginx, use the Nginx module if installed. Create a virtual host or server block for the domain.

Step 3: Set the domain name, document root and any aliases such as www.example.com. If the website uses PHP, make sure the server is configured to pass PHP files to the correct PHP handler.

Step 4: Point DNS records to the VPS IP address. Usually this means setting A records for the root domain and www version. DNS changes can take time to update globally.

Step 5: Test the website in a browser. If it does not load, check the web server status, virtual host settings, file permissions and DNS records.

Keep domain setups clean and consistent. Use meaningful folder names, enable SSL once DNS points correctly, and avoid editing several domains at once. A tidy Webmin configuration makes future migrations, troubleshooting and website expansion much easier.
