How to Check DNS Resolution from Your VPS

VPS Servers · Self-help guide

DNS resolution problems can stop updates, API calls, email delivery, and website connections from working. Connect by SSH and test a domain with getent hosts example.com. If installed, use dig example.com or nslookup example.com. On Ubuntu, install DNS tools with sudo apt install dnsutils. On AlmaLinux, install them with sudo dnf install bind-utils. If DNS lookups fail, check /etc/resolv.conf and your network configuration. Do not randomly change DNS resolver settings on a production VPS without knowing how the server is configured. When reporting DNS issues, include the domain tested, command output, server IP address, and time of the test.
