How to Check Disk Space on a VPS

VPS Servers · Self-help guide

Low disk space can stop websites, databases, email, logs, and control panels from working correctly. Connect by SSH and run df -h to view disk usage in a readable format. Look at the Use% column for partitions close to 90% or higher. To find large folders, run sudo du -h --max-depth=1 /var | sort -h or sudo du -h --max-depth=1 /home | sort -h. On very large servers, these commands may take time. Do not delete files randomly. Logs can often be reviewed with sudo journalctl --disk-usage. If you are unsure what is safe to remove, contact support before deleting data from a live client server.
