Getting Started with Webmin

Webmin · Self-help guide

Webmin is a web-based control panel for managing a Linux VPS or dedicated server without needing to remember every terminal command. It is ideal for website owners, developers and agencies who want more control than standard shared hosting, but still prefer a clear browser interface for common server jobs.

Step 1: Open your Webmin login address in a secure browser session. Always use the HTTPS version of the link and avoid logging in from public Wi-Fi unless you are using a trusted VPN.

Step 2: Enter the username and password supplied with your VPS. Webmin accounts are powerful, so treat the login like your main server key. Do not share it with developers unless they genuinely need server-level access.

Step 3: Once inside, look at the left menu. Webmin groups tools into areas such as System, Servers, Networking, Hardware and Others. This structure helps you find modules for users, services, databases, firewall rules and scheduled tasks.

Step 4: Before changing settings, check the dashboard. Review memory, CPU load, disk usage, running services and recent login activity. These quick checks give you a useful health snapshot of the server.

Step 5: Make one change at a time. Save it, test it, then move on. This is much safer than changing several services at once.

Best practice: keep notes of important changes, especially firewall edits, Apache or Nginx configuration changes, database permissions and cron jobs. Webmin is friendly, but it still controls real server services. A careful approach keeps your hosting stable.
