How to Open Web Ports on Ubuntu with UFW

VPS Servers · Self-help guide

If your website does not load but the web server is running, the firewall may be blocking traffic. On Ubuntu, check UFW with sudo ufw status verbose. To allow standard web traffic, run sudo ufw allow 80/tcp for HTTP and sudo ufw allow 443/tcp for HTTPS. If SSH is not already allowed, add it before enabling the firewall. For standard SSH, use sudo ufw allow 22/tcp. If your server uses a custom SSH port, allow that instead. Enable UFW only after checking required ports with sudo ufw enable. Test your website and SSH access. Do not close your current SSH session until you confirm access still works.
