Managing Nginx with Webmin

Webmin · Self-help guide

Nginx is popular for fast static file delivery, reverse proxy setups and efficient hosting on VPS servers. Many developers use it for Laravel, Node.js applications, APIs, WordPress caching layers or as a front-end proxy to another service. Webmin can make common Nginx tasks easier when the Nginx module is available.

Step 1: Log in to Webmin and open the Nginx module, usually under Servers. If you do not see it, the server may be using Apache instead, or the module may need to be installed.

Step 2: Check the service status. You can start, stop, reload or restart Nginx from Webmin. A reload is usually safer than a full restart because it applies configuration changes without dropping active connections where possible.

Step 3: Open the server block for your domain. Check the server name, root path, index files and SSL settings. For Laravel, the root should normally point to the public directory, not the main project folder.

Step 4: If using Nginx as a reverse proxy, confirm the proxy_pass destination is correct. This is commonly used for applications running on internal ports.

Step 5: Save changes, test the configuration and then reload Nginx. If there is an error, read the message carefully before trying again.

Good Nginx management is about precision. Keep configurations simple, avoid duplicate server names, and always test after editing. When tuned correctly, Nginx gives excellent performance for busy websites and modern web applications.
