How to Change Your Root Password in Webmin
Changing your root password is one of the most important security tasks you can perform on a Webmin-managed VPS. The root user has complete control of the server, so the password should be strong, private and updated whenever staff access changes.
Step 1: Log in to Webmin using your current server administrator details. Use a trusted device and make sure the browser address starts with HTTPS before entering credentials.
Step 2: In the left menu, open System, then choose Change Passwords. Depending on the server setup, you may see a list of Linux users including root and any extra accounts created for developers or applications.
Step 3: Select root from the list. Enter the new password carefully. Use a long password with uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. A passphrase with several random words is often easier to remember and harder to guess.
Step 4: Confirm the new password and save the change. Webmin will update the Linux system password for that account.
Step 5: Open a new browser or SSH session and test the new password before closing your existing session. This helps avoid locking yourself out because of a typing mistake.
Do not reuse passwords from WordPress, email, billing accounts or old servers. If a developer no longer needs access, change the password immediately or create separate user accounts instead of sharing root. Good password hygiene reduces the risk of brute force attacks, leaked credentials and accidental changes by people who should no longer have server access.
