How to Create a New Sudo User on AlmaLinux

VPS Servers · Self-help guide

On AlmaLinux, administrator users are commonly added to the wheel group. Connect to your VPS as root or an existing sudo user. Create the user with sudo adduser username. Set a password using sudo passwd username. Add the user to the wheel group with sudo usermod -aG wheel username. Open a new SSH session and log in as the new user, or run su - username. Test sudo access with sudo whoami. If it returns root, sudo is working. Keep your original session open until testing is complete. Only give sudo access to trusted users, because they can change server settings and access sensitive files.
