How to Update Packages on Ubuntu and AlmaLinux Safely

VPS Servers · Self-help guide

Keeping your VPS updated helps reduce security risks and fixes software bugs. Before updating, make sure you have a backup or snapshot if the server runs important client services. On Ubuntu, run sudo apt update to refresh package lists, then sudo apt upgrade to install updates. On AlmaLinux, run sudo dnf check-update to check available updates, then sudo dnf upgrade. Read the package list before confirming. If a kernel update is installed, schedule a maintenance window and reboot with sudo reboot. After rebooting, log back in and check services with systemctl status servicename. Avoid updating during busy business hours unless there is an urgent security reason.
