Managing Server Updates and Packages in Webmin

Webmin · Self-help guide

Keeping a VPS updated is one of the simplest ways to improve security and stability. Linux packages include web servers, PHP versions, database software, SSL libraries, firewall tools and system utilities. Webmin helps you review and install updates from a browser instead of relying only on terminal commands.

Step 1: Log in to Webmin and open System, then Software Package Updates or the package management module for your operating system. The name may vary depending on whether the server uses Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux or another distribution.

Step 2: Refresh the package list. This checks the configured software repositories and shows available updates.

Step 3: Review the update list before installing. Security updates are usually recommended quickly. Major service upgrades should be planned because they can affect websites, PHP applications or database compatibility.

Step 4: Create a backup before important updates. At minimum, back up website files, databases and key configuration files. For major changes, a VPS snapshot is ideal.

Step 5: Apply updates and watch for messages. Some packages may ask whether to keep existing configuration files or replace them. When unsure, keep the current file and review differences later.

Step 6: Restart services if required. Web servers, PHP-FPM, database services and Webmin itself may need a reload or restart.

After updating, test hosted websites, admin panels, email functions and scheduled jobs. Regular updates reduce exposure to known vulnerabilities, but careful timing and testing prevent avoidable downtime.
