How to Install and Use Fail2ban for SSH Protection

VPS Servers · Self-help guide

Fail2ban can help protect SSH by temporarily blocking IP addresses that fail login repeatedly. On Ubuntu, install it with sudo apt update then sudo apt install fail2ban. On AlmaLinux, install EPEL if needed with sudo dnf install epel-release, then run sudo dnf install fail2ban. Start and enable it with sudo systemctl enable --now fail2ban. Check status using sudo systemctl status fail2ban. The default settings may already protect SSH, but configuration can vary. Avoid copying random jail settings from the internet without understanding them. If you use a custom SSH port, make sure Fail2ban is monitoring the correct service and logs.
