Using the Webmin File Manager
The Webmin File Manager is a handy tool for making quick changes to files without opening an FTP client or SSH terminal. It is useful for uploading small files, checking configuration paths, editing text files, extracting archives and reviewing permissions. Because it can access important system areas, use it carefully.
Step 1: Log in to Webmin and open Tools or Others, then File Manager. The exact menu name can vary by Webmin version and theme.
Step 2: Navigate through the folder tree. Website files are often stored under /var/www, /home, or a custom directory chosen when the site was created. Configuration files may be under /etc, but editing these should be done with extra caution.
Step 3: To upload a file, open the target folder and choose Upload. For website updates, upload to the correct document root, not the server root. If uploading a ZIP file, use the extract option after the transfer completes.
Step 4: To edit a file, select it and choose Edit. This is useful for small changes to .htaccess files, PHP configuration snippets, robots.txt, cron scripts or simple static pages.
Step 5: Check permissions after uploading. Public website files usually need to be readable by the web server, but they should not be world-writable. Incorrect permissions can cause errors or security risks.
Best practice: download a copy before editing important files. If a website breaks after a change, restore the previous version immediately. The File Manager is excellent for quick fixes, but large deployments should still use proper backups and version control.
