Configuring Firewall Protection in Webmin
A firewall controls which network traffic can reach your VPS. It is one of the most important security layers on a public server. Webmin can manage firewall rules through tools such as FirewallD, IPtables or Linux Firewall modules, depending on your operating system.
Step 1: Log in to Webmin and locate the firewall module under Networking. Before changing anything, review the current rules. If possible, take a screenshot or export a copy of the configuration.
Step 2: Identify the ports your server actually needs. Common examples include 80 for HTTP, 443 for HTTPS, 22 for SSH, 10000 for Webmin if using the default port, plus mail or database ports only where genuinely required.
Step 3: Allow required traffic and block what is unnecessary. Public database access is rarely needed and should usually be restricted. SSH should be limited where possible, either by IP address or by using key-based authentication.
Step 4: Apply rules carefully. A bad firewall rule can lock you out of Webmin or SSH. Keep an existing session open while testing new rules.
Step 5: Test from another connection. Confirm that websites load, Webmin is accessible, and blocked services are not publicly reachable.
Step 6: Review logs for repeated failed access attempts. This can reveal brute force activity or unwanted scans.
Firewall management is about reducing exposure. Only open what you need, close what you do not use, and review rules whenever you add new services. A tidy firewall makes a VPS much harder to attack.
