Monitoring Server Performance in Webmin

Webmin · Self-help guide

Performance monitoring helps you understand whether your VPS has enough resources and whether a website, script or service is causing problems. Webmin gives you useful visibility into CPU load, memory usage, disk space, running processes and service status.

Step 1: Log in to Webmin and start with the dashboard. Look at CPU load, RAM, swap usage and disk usage. A short spike is normal, but constant high usage suggests something needs attention.

Step 2: Open System, then Running Processes. This shows active processes and how much CPU or memory they are using. Web servers, database servers, backup jobs and PHP workers are common resource users.

Step 3: Check disk space. Low disk space can break websites, databases, email delivery and logging. If a partition is nearly full, review backups, old logs, cache folders and unused files.

Step 4: Review system logs. Webmin can help access logs that show failed services, authentication attempts, web server errors or database warnings.

Step 5: Check service status. Make sure Apache, Nginx, MySQL, PHP-FPM, mail services and firewall tools are running as expected.

Step 6: Compare performance with recent changes. If load increased after installing a plugin, adding a cron job or launching a campaign, the cause may be obvious.

Good performance work is not guesswork. Monitor first, identify the bottleneck, then act. Sometimes the solution is code optimisation, sometimes caching, and sometimes a VPS upgrade. Webmin gives the visibility needed to make a sensible decision.
