Managing Linux Users and Accounts in Webmin
Webmin makes Linux user management much easier because you can create, edit, lock and remove accounts from a browser interface. This is useful when developers, agencies, staff members or automated applications need access to specific parts of the server.
Step 1: Log in to Webmin and open System, then Users and Groups. This module shows local Linux users and groups. You may see system accounts that belong to services such as mail, databases or web servers. Do not delete accounts unless you know exactly what they do.
Step 2: To create a user, click Create a new user. Enter a username, real name and secure password. Choose whether the user should have a home directory. For normal developer access, a home directory is usually useful.
Step 3: Set the shell carefully. If the user needs SSH access, choose a valid login shell. If the account is only for a service and should not log in interactively, use a restricted or no-login shell where appropriate.
Step 4: Add the user to required groups only. Avoid giving broad permissions such as root-level access unless there is a strong reason. Least privilege is the safest approach.
Step 5: To remove access, lock the password or disable the account first. This is safer than instantly deleting files linked to that user. Once you are sure nothing relies on the account, you can remove it fully.
Good user management keeps your VPS tidy and secure. Use individual accounts rather than shared logins, review accounts regularly, and remove old access when projects finish.
