How to Check Uptime and Recent Reboots on a VPS

VPS Servers · Self-help guide

Uptime information helps confirm whether a server has recently restarted. Connect to the VPS by SSH and run uptime. This shows how long the server has been running and gives load averages. For a clearer boot time, run who -b. To view recent reboot history, run last reboot. If the server restarted unexpectedly, check system logs with sudo journalctl --list-boots and then inspect a boot with sudo journalctl -b -1 for the previous boot. Logs may show updates, crashes, manual reboots, or shutdown events. If the VPS is rebooting regularly without explanation, collect the times and contact support for further investigation.
