How to Check WordPress File Permissions
WordPress · Self-help guide
Incorrect file permissions can stop WordPress from updating or create security risks. In general, folders commonly use permissions like 755 and files commonly use 644, although hosting environments can vary. Use File Manager or FTP to inspect permissions if WordPress cannot upload media, update plugins, or write files. Avoid setting files or folders to 777 unless support specifically instructs you, because it can allow unsafe write access. If a plugin asks for broad permissions, check whether there is a safer option. Permissions may also be affected by file ownership, especially after migrations or manual uploads. If you are unsure, contact support rather than changing large numbers of files on a live website.
