How to Fix WordPress Permalinks and 404 Errors

WordPress · Self-help guide

If WordPress pages show 404 errors but the homepage works, the permalink rules may need refreshing. Log in to the WordPress dashboard and go to Settings, then Permalinks. Do not change anything at first. Simply click Save Changes. This forces WordPress to regenerate its rewrite rules. Visit the affected pages again and refresh the browser. If the issue continues, check whether the .htaccess file exists and is writable on Apache-based hosting. For Nginx hosting, rewrite rules are handled differently and may need server configuration. Also check whether a plugin recently changed custom post types or slugs. Avoid deleting pages or posts while troubleshooting, as the content may still be fine.
