How to Update WordPress Plugins Without Breaking Your Site

WordPress · Self-help guide

Plugin updates are important for security and compatibility, but they can occasionally cause layout or functionality issues. Before updating, take a backup of your files and database. If your website is business critical, update during a quieter time and avoid updating immediately before a campaign or event. In WordPress, go to Dashboard, then Updates or Plugins. Update one or a few plugins at a time, then check the website, contact forms, checkout, and admin pages. If something breaks, note which plugin was updated last and restore from backup if needed. Keep inactive or abandoned plugins removed. For ecommerce websites, test payment and order processes after plugin updates.
